About

Lighthouse Darkroom is a collective of BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and disabled artists dedicated to creative development, radical vulnerability, and liberation. In our respective mediums, we see ourselves as lightworkers, healers, and beacons who alchemize our darkness and pain into something illuminating. As we find ourselves amongst the most vulnerable, overlooked, and abused, we created this space to protect and prioritize our visions and our voices, and affirm that what is in our hearts and our art is valid, regardless of how heavy or messy it is.

Our logo reflects our belief that light, and dark are intrinsically interconnected. The logo features a lighthouse in a lightbulb on a black background. The red bulb evokes imagery of a darkroom, the lightbulb demonstrates the illumination that we strive for in our work. The lighthouse is a beacon, indicating that we are a guiding light for our members and communities.

This collective is our lighthouse and our darkroom; a place for us to normalize and celebrate darkness as an incubator of light. As a community, we confront the darkness inside and around us, and utilize it to create art that is intersectional, introspective, and unapologetic.

  • We not only appreciate and value our strengths, both collectively and individually, but also focus on active and ongoing development. We cultivate ourselves intellectually and deepen our interdisciplinary perspectives by critically reading and analyzing art and media. This joint study expands our abilities to express ourselves artistically.

  • Sensitivity is strength here. There is no place for shame in this common meeting space between communities. Black and Brown, LGBTGQ+ and disabled people are our priority, because we are among the most vulnerable. In our community-building and cooperation, we are guided by our diverse lived experiences, understanding and empathy.

    Radical Vulnerability

  • As creators that have historically and contemporarily been overlooked, we defiantly utilize our visions, voices, and work to cultivate collective consciousness and open collaboration. By turning darkness into light, our art is a beacon to others, ourselves, and one another. It is our responsibility to create art that illuminates our unique experiences in these times.
